On Dancefloor

Taking a break from the international affairs and the economics involved (read IE B!), i watched the Dance Floor last night.

The theme was modern. Pretty neat performance from some of the groups. One look and it’s obvious who have the dance techniques and who don’t. Platinum put up an amazing modern piece. I can get the feel of it. The teen-crushy stuff. JDI, on the other hand, i don’t get what they were trying to put across. They are probably a hip hop group, but technique wise they are definitely a pain to watch. Peace to hip hop, but i have seen good hip hop dancers with very sound technique. The ballroom and latin dancers are good, in the ballroom and latin sense. Fantastic Four is once again, impressive. Soul Fusion is again strong on technique. E square is good as well.

By now i guess it’s quite clear who i am rooting for. Platinum, Soul Fusion and Fantastic Four and E square. By being the sucker for group work, i prefer the first three. E square doesn’t look just as good on the stage. In fact, Fantastic Four now look like they command less of the stage presence with one member out of the group.

Most of the judges commented that dance is about the feel. But hey, what is the feel when there’s no technique to back things up? Bill is probably the only judge who impresses me with his professional knowledge. Not surprising, given his credential. Li Ling appears to be the next person with the most knowledge in dance, after all she did study dance. However it is just disappointing that she speaks her mind entirely from the perspective of tv and entertainment. What happened to that atas artsy dancsy stuff?

I disagree with others said that this show is out to make Singapore looks bad in comparison to “So You Think You Can Dance”. It proved the point that we do have talents who are passionate in dance, despite all the pragmatic school of thought that the beloved education system is promoting. At this point, i wonder what is the point of inviting more salsa groups to take part in the competition? The format of the show is obviously biased towards people with experience in different genre of dances. Salsa dancers are mostly, salsa dancers. And salsa performance, is like the Mayan competition that you can find on the web. A lot of fluff and tricks. But to an outsider they probably cannot tell the difference between one item and the next. All fall under gym movement category. Even if a salsa group gets into the final 10, there is little chance of the group surviving the voting system for too many weeks. There isn’t much room to play around. What about Asian Fusion round? Do Wong Fei Hong item like what Rach and Jimmy did (which i do like very much)? Then modern leh? More gynmas stuff? How about ballroom round next week?

It’s a good thing that most of us opted out before the top 60 rounds actually. Not like we are giving up without a fight. It’s more like why take care in a competition after calculating that you do have a lousy chance of shining?
